Cape Town has everything on offer that you would like to explore on a holiday, the mountains, sea and natural fauna together create a beautiful city that witnessed the abolishment of apartheid. The Table Mountain has almost vertical cliffs and the flat topped summit of 1000 meters along with the Devil’s Peak and the Lion’s Head form a picturesque mountainous backdrop enclosing the city of Cape Town, also known as the City Bowl. To the south is the Cape Peninsula, a mountainous spine extending for about forty kilometers into the Atlantic. The city has a Mediterranean climate. The extensive coastline, the coastal plains, the rough mountain ranges with inland valleys has much to offer to the traveler visiting Cape Town.

 

Explore the view atop the Table Mountain

The top of the Table Mountain can be reached by a cable car or the more adventurous can hike along one of the trails leading to the top of the mountain. There are many a hiking trails that can be explored, with various difficulty levels. Few of the more popular trails are the Hoerikwaggo, the Pipe Track and the Kasteel Sport. The Table Mountain is like this humongous slab of sandstone about 1000 meters high and three kilometres long with a flat top. The mountain has a rich flora and fauna. There are some 1400 species of plants and many mammals that can be found here. Once you reach the top of the mountain, you can witness a beautiful view of the city and its coastline.

 

Robben Island

Until the very recent past, South Africa was a colony held under foreign rule. Close to the Cape Town is the Robben Island, a former prison where the great crusader for peace Nelson Mandela spent eighteen years fighting apartheid, along with many others. Don’t be surprised if your tour guide is a past political prisoner who shall give you a firsthand account of the struggle and life of political prisoners. Nelson Mandela and many other leaders of current political parties in South Africa have spent time here in this very prison. The firsthand account might be uncomforting for many or probably enliven the spirit of freedom making us more humble and thankful for the joys that we receive in life!
